Dining with David: Suzy-Q’s Bar-B-Que Shack

Suzy-Q’s Bar-B-Que Shack – Buffalo, NY – April 11, 2012
http://www.suzy-que.blogspot.com/
Since I drove down from Toronto late in the afternoon (no SWA flight option), I had one more night to spend in Buffalo.  I have already had their famous ‘Wick’ (see prior posting) and wanted to try something different.  I researched and asked and kept getting pointed to a local ‘southern bbq’ joint.  Being born/raised in BBQ central (AL), I just had to try this one.
It is located right on the river, right across from the Canadian border.  It is truly a shack with very few parking and seating spaces (I got mine to go).  I was greeted by Suzy and asked what she would recommend.  She went to their namesake, the Piggy Pie.  Decision made.
I got this wonderful concoction; mixture of cheese fries and a BBQ plate.  This is a large mountain, ~5” high,  with a base of French fries.  It is then topped with pulled pork, baked beans, homemade ‘Smokin’ salsa and melted cheese.   Suzy is known for her smoked meat and the pork had great rings; wonderful taste.  The melted cheese with beans and salsa (and I got BBQ sauce for dipping) was a very unusual taste and well worth it.
A very unique place in a great location; truly a dive.  I would love to try their other specials at some point.  If ever in Buffalo, this is a must stop.

Travels with David: Original American Kazoo Company

Original American Kazoo Company – Eden, NY – April 11, 2012
www.edenkazoo.com
Since I was close by (15 mins) and had a few minutes before dinner, I drove on down to an historic landmark.  This is the original metal kazoo factory and only remaining of its kind; since 1916.  Located in a quaint little town, typical NE row houses of all kinds, in an old metal fabrication building, this place has been restored into a fully functional factory, museum and store.
It is amazing to see all of the steps and process with different machines just to produce a simple musical device.  Now, these are not your normal plastic types, these are true metal grade with different options in presentation from the normal submarine style to tractors, trains, planes, cars, etc.  Not necessarily a place you would spend hours but for 15 mins, a great little stop right on Lake Erie.  Just a great piece of Americana.

Dining with David: St. Lawrence Market / Carousel Bakery

St. Lawrence Market / Carousel Bakery – Toronto, ON – April 10, 2012
www.stlawrencemarket.com
As I was driving into Toronto, I had time to grab a little lunch.  I had asked ‘where’ is the best local place to eat.  No doubt, told to go to the Lawrence Market and try their famous sandwich.  The St. Lawrence Market is a converted old building with two floors of open markets and local restaurants; very unusual in these days.  It is just several blocks from the lake and right down from the famous CN Tower; the largest tower in the world.
In one of their local candy stores, I picked up a couple dark chocolate covered ginger balls.  This is a gelled ginger root (strong but not overpowering) dunked in a dark, rich chocolate.  Never seen or had this before and it is not bad.  I just had to try for the weird factor.
After walking around, I finally stopped at the famous Carousel Bakery.  This is an open bakery made famous by the likes of Emeril Lagasse and Bobby Flay. They serve a sandwich they call the World Famous Peameal Bacon Sandwich.
This Peameal Bacon Sandwich is served on a fresh, homemade bun.  It contains Peameal Bacon; a pork loin similar to Canadian Bacon but thicker and coated in ground yellow peas (yes, that is tough for me to even type).  I put a little spicy mustard and horse radish (as recommended by the clerk) to top it off.  This was a very different sandwich; I would not say the best ever but very unique.  It had a great taste with the pork and slightly charred from cooking on the grill.  A definite must try whenever in Toronto.

“If Easter says anything to us today, it says this: You can put truth in a grave, but it won't stay there.  You can nail it to a cross, wrap it in winding sheets and shut it up in a tomb, but it will rise!”     ~ Clarence W. Hall
