Dining with David: Mickey’s Pizza
Mickey’s Pizza – Mississauga,
ON – October 17, 2012

For a place billed as ‘the best pizza pie you’ve ever had PERIOD’, they are not too far off. This is a place that you will not just stumble upon. It is located in a little strip mall in a little lower section of town; message parlor and beauty salon next door. But once inside, this ‘dive’ will keep you there.
I had pre-ordered one of their specials, the Killer King Smokey Dragon. This little beast is a deep dish pie with pepperoni, strip bacon and crumble bacon (Canadian bacon or ham as we would call it) smoked Mozzarella and topped with a deep smoked BBQ sauce.
Let’s first start with the crust; it is a thick, buttery, flour based crust as compared to the typical Chicago style corn-meal based. It is not the best crust I have ever had but a very good taste. The pie is then stuffed with all these smoked ingredients that really come alive. The topping of a deep smoked BBQ sauce is perfect for this pie. Since it is applied and then cooked in a table-size open air rotating metal pizza cooker, the sauce gains a crusty texture and is wonderful.
Is it the best pizza I have ever had, no; but it is one of the most unusual and perfectly matched ingredients pies I have had. Highly recommend to try all of their Signature Pizzas if you are in the area.

Dining with David: Zoup! Fresh Soup Company
Zoup! – Independence, OH – October 15, 2012

I get to my hotel in the wonderful, sunny, tropical area known as Cleveland; NOT! Since it dropped over 20 degrees since yesterday with winds up to 35 MPH and a nice cold rain with low (I mean low) cloud cover, what else would you want to eat but some soup?
I found this place right down the street from the hotel and it seemed just right. It is similar to a Panera Bread (one right across the street) but focus is on the soup rather than the bread (my bride would say YES to that). I ordered the small combo which gave me a cup of soup and a half sandwich.
The soups are all out in view (reminded me of an old Baskin Robbins, just healthy) and you get to try anyone you would like. I tried several but decided on the Manhattan Clam Chowder. This was a tomato and clam broth with clams, potatoes, onions, celery and garlic. A very good taste with strips of clams and big chunks of potatoes. A good choice. I then got a sandwich (used for dipping of course). This was their 4 Cheese Melt with Pepper Jack, smoked Gouda, Muenster and mild Cheddar toasted on a multigrain roll. For the wonderful Cleveland weather, this place is perfect.
